Florence…..on the Big Screen
Famed movie director Sydney Pollack showcased the beauties of Florence in the movie Bobby Deerfield (starring Al Pacino and Marthe Keller). The on-location shots of the city make the movie well worth seeing, despite its weak storyline.
In particular, there’s a scene on Via Tournabuoni (one of Florence’s most famous shopping locales) which is exquisite. Keller’s character, poking fun at the dark glasses-wearing Deerfield (Pacino), dares him to remove the glasses. He doesn’t want to, fearing that he’ll be mobbed by his adoring public. Finally, accepting Keller’s dare, he removes the glasses.
As the two continue to walk along the street, no one disturbs them. No one comes rushing up, asking for an autograph. Not surprisingly, Deerfield is disappointed by this lack of recognition and interest in him, a famous race driver.
Seeing his situation, Keller’s character steps to the side and begins hollering “Bobby Deerfield,” “Bobby Deerfield,” all the while, pointing at him. Upon hearing his name, people begin to turn to him and come over for autographs. While signing his name, Deerfield looks over at his companion, who’s sitting on steps, off to the side, smiling.
Anyone who’s visited Florence will enjoy seeing the city again through the eyes of Bobby Deerfield.
